Studio Ghibli’s Ronia the Robber’s Duaghter
Oh my goodness! I need to start learning Japanese A.S.A.P! Studio Ghibli recently announced that they will be venturing on to the small screen, and their first project will be based on Astrid Lindgren‘s Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. Set in a mythical Medieval Sweden, Ronia is the daughter of a chief of bandits, who spends her days exploring the dark forests and chasing the fantastical creatures surrounding her rambling castle. I fell in love with this story as a young girl; Ronia is clever, willful and courageous, a rare depiction of a multidimensional female character in children’s literature.
Hiyao Miyazaki’s son, Goro is set to direct Ronia, and he also has high hopes for bringing this classic tale to T.V.:
Ronia the Robber’s Daughter is a story not just about a girl who grows into adulthood, but it is also a story about the love and growth between a parent and child, and a story about the bonds between friends. My goal is to create a work that everyone, from children to adults, will be able to enjoy.
Can’t wait to catch this show; hopefully it will make its way to the States soon!
